BLUES ASSIGNMENT
Lyrics:
Well it started at our roof
Where we were dancing to the blues
Singing and laughing
but the very next day
something hit my head
a feeling of agitation
well, what the hell are you doing here?
I don't need you anymore
take your love with you
You said, "what did I do?
I did not mistreat you"
oh, girl, you're in for a treat
well, it's not that all
you're just too clingy
you can't leave me alone
If you just can't face the truth
then get out of my face
just take your love with you
For this assignment, I had to create a blues song that uses the basic fundaments when creating one. I used the I, IV, and V progression. For the first four measures, I used I, IV, I, and I. After that, for the next four measures, I used IV, IV, I, I. Finally, for the last four measures, I used V, IV, I, V. With this progression, I decided to play it in the key of C major. That being said, the way how I approached this was to just play the chords for each measure while playing a lower note on my left hand so that the song does not sound dull or empty. Even though the song I created sounds a little bit more uplifting, I did this on purpose since I was inspired by other artists such as the beach boys or Elvis and their songs were catchy. That being said, in terms of lyrics, I decided to create a break-up song but with fierce and boldness. Instead of it being sad and depressed, it sounds like if a person is glad that the relationship ended already and has been waiting due to their partner being annoying or toxic. Overall, if this song was played at a fast tempo (but it is not because I can not play fast) then this song would be fun and catchy.
Even though this assignment is interesting and fun to do, there were some issues I faced along the way. One of these issues was trying to be original. When playing this basic chord progression, this reminded me of other artists and it was making me make a song from the influence of another artist. To me, it did not feel original. Another issue was trying to follow the basic chord progression. Since I do not write or make any blues, the process of making this song felt unnatural and basic. During certain times, I had the temptation to change the progression of the song. It felt too repetitive for my taste and it also forced me to not be as creative. On the other hand, there were also successes. One of them is being able to find a chord progression I like. Second, I like the lyrics I wrote for this song. Lastly, I was able to complete it! Overall, this assignment was fun to do and it forced me out of my comfort zone
